US and Denmark reach deal to build US military presence in Greenland

Washington and Copenhagen have struck an agreement that would give the United States an expanded military footprint in Greenland, a deal that follows months of pointed rhetoric from President Trump about American strategic interests on the island. Danish officials framed the arrangement as a continuation of longstanding NATO defense cooperation in the Arctic rather than any transfer of sovereignty.

The pact is likely to reassure allies who had watched warily as Washington floated more sweeping claims over Greenland earlier in the year. Analysts say expanded basing rights reflect growing great-power competition over Arctic shipping routes and mineral resources as melting ice opens the region to more traffic.
