Oklahoma Disposal Well Near Enid’s Water Supply Is Plugged After Investigation

An oil field wastewater disposal well sitting roughly a quarter-mile from municipal water supply sites in Enid, Oklahoma, has been permanently sealed, ProPublica reports, following an investigation it carried out with The Frontier.
The reporting found that the Oklahoma Corporation Commission approved the well, known as the Flying Monkey, in 2018 without holding the hearing state rules require before wastewater can be injected within a half-mile of public water wells. The city of Enid asked the state last year to revoke its permit.
On Sept. 14, with that complaint still pending, the well’s owner, BCE-Mach III Midstream Holdings, sealed it with a cast-iron plug and cement while a state representative watched. A lawyer for the company said it was closed because it was underused and no longer needed; the commission did not respond to requests for comment.
